Rev. James Martin, SJ kicks off webinar series in September

Join Rev. James Martin, SJ on September 12, 2017 at 1:00 PM EDT as he kicks off the Roundtable's fall webinar series, Ministry on the Margins, with a discussion on his new book, Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity. Fr. Martin will offer practical insight and suggestions on how social action directors can play a pivotal role in this effort, many of whom are already responsible for this ministry. Pope Francis regularly reminds us of our Baptismal call to minister to the peripheries.

As leaders within the church’s social mission, learning practical ways to reach our LGBT brothers and sisters is one step in our ministry to those who feel the church has condemned their sexual orientation rather than ministering to and with them as individuals. Additionally, his sound Scriptural meditations will ground our work. His recent book is endorsed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, head of the Roman Curia’s newly formed Dicastery for the Laity, the Family and Life; Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey; and Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego. If you haven’t read any of his previous works, do so, now! Recently appointed as a consultor to the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communications, Fr. Martin is the kind of communicator who will inspire, engage, and challenge you both personally and professionally. We hope you can join us!

Ministry on the Margins webinar series seeks to provide diocesan social action directors resources and suggestions on how to address the issues of same-sex attraction, racism, and migration. All of these issues bring the Church outside of herself to the peripheries of our society, which is what the Gospel and Pope Francis are calling us to do. "We must open ourselves to the peripheries, also acknowledging that, at the margins too, even one who is cast aside and scorned by society is the object of God's generosity," (10/12/14). Please join us for one or all three parts of the series!
